Labor Day Weekend Fishing Report

As August comes to an end, it’s also the unofficial end of Summer. The cooler temps tell us September might be a little cooler than recent years rather than the bonus month of summer we have had the past decade or so.

The terrestrial/attractor fishing on the upper Manistee has been decent but with the cooler overnight temps bringing the water temps down, you might be better off fishing later in the day rather than first thing in the morning. The Tricos are finishing up which is longer than usual, and somedays the fish key in on them so be sure to have some in your fly box. Flying ants should be showing up any day and are strongly suggested as the fish love them. Smaller (less than 1.5” ) streamers with some weight to them fished on a floating line can get those fish that aren’t looking up to play our game.

The male brook trout have turned vibrant with color as they enter their pre-spawn stage. With fewer people on the water post Labor Day those bigger brown trout start to roam a little more so make sure your knots are good if one should show up.

With the change in temperatures and some consistent winds out of the North and NW for the past week, the rivers are starting to get fishable numbers of King Salmon running in them.

All the local rivers are running low and clear.

Good luck!

Ted

Trout Fishing – Have the river to yourself with school starting and football keeping people off the trout rivers.
Learn to Fly Fish – Spend a half-day with some casting lessons then time on a local small lake catching fish.
Fall Steelhead – After a strong Spring Season we are looking forward to Fall – just a few dates remain available.
