Mid-September Fishing Report

9/16/2026

Mid-September finds a hint of cooler temps in the evenings and mornings  followed by sun filled days keeping the nice weather going.

The migratory salmon have begun showing up in the rivers like the Manistee and Betsie but with the lack of consistent favorable wind directions, it seems there are pulses of fish moving upstream to join the ones already in the river rather than any surges. We thankfully got some rain the other day and the water came up and that should encourage the fish in the river mouths to move upstream.  This will likely continue as fish are starting to stage in the deep slow holes near known gravel sections used for spawning.  Water temps are still running warm (mid 60s) and the rivers are running about right thanks to the recent rain.

The trout fishing has offered an extended terrestrial fishing on the Boardman and upper Manistee rivers. The brook trout are all colored up as they begin their spawning season and are eating both on the surface and below.  The brown trout have been more shy than we like but with more time passed after the busy summer season, they start to show themselves again and put a little weight on before their October spawning season and upcoming winter.

Good luck!

Ted
