Late September Fishing Report

With September winding down it seems fishing is ramping up.

The trout streams have been pretty quiet with few anglers fishing and the fish have responded by slipping out from their protective log jams and are out where you can get a fly to them. With the water clear (upper 50s temp), you can see the fish, but usually after you have spooked them. Cast down and across with smaller streamers and twitch and strip rather then rip and strip for your best success. With some days forecast to be in the 70s, keep a box of terrestrials with you in case the fish start looking up again. Fall colors on the upper Manistee are starting to pop making it a great way to spend an early fall day in solitude.

Salmon fishing picked up this week with a change in the weather and some favorable winds to mix up the water and draw some fish closer inshore and up the rivers. All the local NW Michigan rivers have fish in them and a few are starting to scratch the gravel as they begin the spawning ritual.

Mid September Fishing Report

Water levels are in good shape as nice, pleasant weather continues through September. Water temps on the upper Manistee are in the high 50s and with some sunlight, it creeps into the lower 60s. Getting a little later start in the morning helps to allow the fish to wake up and terrestrials dry out from the night’s dew fall.

Sub-surface twitch flies and smaller streamers are also a good approach. Seems that the brook trout have shuffled through the river moving closer to their favorite spawning regions and the bigger browns are starting to come out from cover after a long summer of playing hide and seek.

Salmon have entered most of the rivers in west Michigan as have salmon anglers. With the warm weather runs likely will be stagnant until the next episode of north/northwest winds push some fresh fish into the river mouths and an increase in river levels from rainfall draws them up. If headed out, please share the resource, pick up after yourself and lead by example. Or go trout fishing instead to avoid that scene which seems to only get worse each year.

Bass and bluegill fishing has pretty much come to an end with most of the fish hanging in the deeper water off the shallows as it offers them the best thermocline. After 3.5 months of pleasing anglers, I supposed they earned to have the rest of the fishing season off.

Early September Fishing Report

The water has come up and down again after heavy rains over the weekend leaving the water stained which should clear up by the weekend. The hot weather has thankfully left us with nice, cool, evenings and sunny afternoons in the forecast.

The Tricos have come and gone on the trout rivers and the terrestrials are hit and miss, so is the fishing. After a long season the trout are warry. Experience tells me once the water temps drop, the days get a little shorter and the brook trout get that pre-spawning tingle in their loins, fishing improves for both brookies and browns. Cloudy/overcast days continue to be preferred over the bright days.

Terrestrials and twitch flies are a great approach but keep some smaller Isonychia and BWO dries in your box and a few of your favorite wet flies. Have any flying ants in your box? You should because if they show up like they often do in Sept, so do the fish. Once Labor day is behind us, most folks forget about trout fishing making the local rivers good place to spend a few hours.

The cooler weather will help improve the lake fishing for those looking to get some more gill and bass fishing in as they move from deep back into the shallows again.

Mid August Fishing Report

After last week’s rains, the rivers have returned to normal levels and clarity.

Trout fishing is slowing down some due to all the food that washed downstream with the recent high water feeding the fish. And, well, it’s that time of year where the fish – it seems – are wore out after a long spring and summer of pressure.

If headed out, look for Tricos to be hitting the water mid-morning providing some match-the-hatch dry fly fishing for brook and brown trout. When fishing these small flies, sometimes it’s best to fish a two-fly rig – with a larger dry to serve as an indicator with a small Trico below it. It’s also a great time to use that 3 and 4 wt rod you might have.

Wet flies and small streamers (less than 3 inches) fished on a floating line can bend the rod some if the surface activity isn’t overly productive. Other terrestrials and attractors make this time of year fun on top for the dry fly angler looking to spend some time on the river with out all the demands and technical fly fishing.

Lake fishing continues to offer bluegill and bass, but it seems the best fishing is early, late or on a rare cloudy day. Nothing new here – target the structure including the drop-offs for where fish are hanging out.

Early August Fly Fishing Report

UPDATE August 11: Two heavy rainfalls in the region the past two days have increased river flows significantly. Anglers will find the rivers high, moving fast, and dirty. To monitor your favorite river, use these sites:

River conditions on the Manistee and Boardman are pretty much in step with the season – running slightly clear and low making mornings and cloudy days the best approach to fishing this time of year.

Hatches on the river are pretty much limited to Tricos in the evenings and Trico spinner falls in the a.m. Some days these last for a while giving you multiple targets to cast to, other days it is short lived with a brief window of spinners falling and feeding fish. The occasional Isonychia is coming off, more likely in the evening and they are getting smaller in size (#12 & 14) as the summer continues.

When bugs aren’t around, it’s time to cast “Foam and Rubber” – attractors and terrestrial patterns which have rubber legs. Somedays they want big patterns dead-drifted, other days twitched, or sometimes it’s a smaller pattern that looks more natural. Good brook trout and decent brown trout are coming up but the bigger fish – it seems – have mostly gone on summer vacation which is normal; look for them to start showing up again when school starts, water temps cool, and fishing pressure drops.

Lake fishing, too, has slowed with more bluegill playing along than the bigger bass. If looking for the bass, go sub surface with small streamers fished slow on either an intermediate line or small sink-tip.

Smallmouth bass fishing on rivers has been a good option for those looking to cast a larger fly on sink-tips, slow sinking lines, and the occasional floating line with a dry fly for fish that tend to pull pretty hard.
