Northern Michigan Fly Fishing Report

Early March Fly Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - March 1, 2018

March is here and so is an early start to the spring steelhead fishing. The winter – at times – has been just that – winter, but there have been plenty of thaws along the way pretty much leaving us without any snow, ice-free rivers and a favorable forecast.

River levels on the Manistee and Betsie are up a bit with some stain but that is pretty much normal for this time of year as some run-off works its way through the river systems kick-starting things. With the rising water levels and increased water temps, combined with a few days of sunshine, the steelhead are a little restless. Fish that have wintered over are moving around throughout river systems and getting closer to gravel sections but are still hanging out in the nearby deeper holes with a little less current moving through them. Fresh fish will trickle through the systems offering a mix bag of fish – from colored up winter fish to bright chromers.

With water temps still in the upper 30s, drag-free/Indicator and bottom-bounce presentations are your best bet. As is normally the case for late winter and spring steelheading, an egg pattern fished with a nymph is a great one-two approach. Egg patterns in orange combinations along with chartreuse combinations are ideal in the stained conditions. For nymphs, look for black stoneflies, caddis and alevin to produce.

Don’t put your snow shovels away just yet, but definitely get your fishing equipment out.

Good luck.

Ted

Spring Steelhead – Now through April, get on the water for Spring’s first opportunity to bend the rod.
Trout – Reliable hatches begin in May for surface activity and it’s also a great time for fishing streamers.
Learn How – Take a 1/2 day trip with the goal of learning how to fly fish or improve, customized to your interests.

End of the Year Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - December 20, 2017

It’s the end of the month and year and possibly the season. The long-term forecast is calling for sub-freezing temperatures for a while so it’s going to be a bit before we get another warm-up and allow for some tolerable weather on the river.  But stayed tuned – a little sun, no wind and temps above freezing can make fishing a treat after too many holiday parties or time visiting the in-laws.

Steelhead are in pretty much all of the local rivers including the Manistee, Betsie and even a few in the Boardman.  With water temps in the mid to low 30’s, the fish have mostly taken to their winter holding areas which include deep, slower holes and around structure like wood, deeper pockets or both.  It’s a good time to work on that drag free drift and fish below a float/indicator but since we are targeting “Fall” fish that have become “winter” fish, they will still chase a swung fly – just slow down the swing and target some softer water.

For those interested there is a recap/summary of this year’s fishing which can be read in the Winter Newsletter .

Thanks to all of you that joined me on the water to help make 2017 a great year. All the best to you and yours this Holiday Season and throughout the New Year with lots of time spent on the water.

Early December Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - December 6, 2017

While fall was pretty mild with some cold days mixed in, it looks like those days are gone as winter has shown itself. With the white stuff falling outside the window and the long term forecast not calling for temps to be above freezing, anglers will have to look for their windows of opportunity to fish comfortably.

Steelhead fishing has remained mixed – doing good one day, not so good the next which seemed to be the theme for the fall run. There are a good number of fish in the system and they are scattered throughout river systems. As water temps drop into the upper 30s, the fish are mostly taking up residence in the slower water to the side of the bubble line.  Swung flies in and around structure have been working as are flies presented on float and indicator rigs.  Bottom bouncing/duck and chuck will work too, but the fish are starting to get lethargic and picky. Small, natural egg patterns on the smaller waters like the Betsie have been working where some larger eggs in bolder color patterns have been the theme on larger river systems like the Manistee.

Trout fishing this fall wasn’t what it normally is for the time of year but the streamer angler casting mid-sized streamers on presenting them a little slower in the cold water can get some good fish to eat. Yellow streamers, natural sculpin and baitfish patterns are great themes to start with but as always mix up the pattern and presentation.

Good luck.

Ted

Late November Fly Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - November 21, 2017

Its late fall fishing around here with mixed weather ranging from snow, to rain to even a little sun (we sure haven’t seen much of that for a while).

Steelhead remain the primary target for most anglers with the fish transitioning into hold-over water.  Look for fish to be in holes and the slower tail-outs as the water temps continue to drop. Last week’s rain gave the levels a little bump but they are still in good shape as the water remains a little stained too on the Manistee and Betsie. Egg patterns and a nymph is a great one-two approach when drifting or fishing under an indicator. As temps hover around 40 our window for a good swing bite is starting to narrow.

Trout fishing below Tippy dam has been decent but with the stained water it’s hard to work the streamer efficiently around all the wood without donating a couple of flies. Baitfish and sculpin patterns have been best but like always, mix it up and fish it slower than you would in the spring as water temps are cooler.

With firearm deer season ending Nov. 30, consider wearing some orange while fishing for safety.

Good luck and have a nice Thanksgiving.

Ted

November Fly Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - November 9, 2017

Its feeling like November with signs of Jack Frost in the morning, a little white stuff in the air and fish that are transitioning into mixed cover. With the salmon done in the rivers, steelhead are no longer easily found directly below them. A good number of fish have moved into the local river systems this fall including the Manistee and Betsie, but with all the rain, the fish have scattered themselves throughout the systems. Look for fish to be anywhere on a given day: in structure/ wood, holes, pocket water, cross-overs and inside seams.

The past week’s fishing slowed down after a productive fall, but there are still good numbers of fish to be caught with ideal water temperatures which remains in the upper 40s. The water clarity remains stained as the river works though all the run-off and tannins from all the rain the past two weeks.

With fish less focused on eggs, we have been fishing a tandem rig – one egg pattern with nymph trailers like steelhead buggers, hex nymphs and caddis.  Those who prefer to swing flies – this is the time of year to pull out that two-hander and swing a big streamer across both transitioning flats and around wood. Some leaves are still around but the leaf drop/catch has been reasonable.

The trout fishing is starting to get going as they, too, look for alternative food sources now that the all you can eat salmon egg buffet has come to an end. Streamer fishing for brown trout should remain solid for the next month or so. Small baitfish patterns like Dirty Hippy – rainbow, are a great pattern to start with, then cycle through your favorite sculpin and attractor patterns after.

Good luck.

Ted
