Late June Fly Fishing Report

As Summer (solstice) takes place on the 21st, June starts to end and the night fishing really begins.

Angler’s are looking for the nocturnal Hex Mayflies on the local trout rivers and some (Au Sable) have already begun and it’s about to begin on others (Manistee) if they haven’t already. Headlamps, bug spray, patience and strong tippet are standard issue supplies for the matter. But before nightfall, look for Isonychias, the last (I really mean it this time) Brown Drakes, and Bat Flies to provide some surface activity.

Smallmouth bass fishing is starting up again on the lower Manistee for those using smaller baitfish streamers. The largemouth bass and bluegill are keeping anglers busy with tight lines on the local lakes as weeds develop along drop offs and some bigger gills can still be found shallow.

In this bright, warm weather, mornings and evenings are best for the trout and lake fishing. As long as the cool nights continue to drop water temps, we should be o.k. fishing the rivers without temps getting above 68 degrees which is the threshold angler’s should recognize as too warm for fishing trout.

Early May Fishing Report

We finally received some rain to knock down the dust and pollen while helping things finish greening up after an early start to the process. The rivers are still low and running clearer than normal for this time of year, but that’s been the story since late February. Water temps are stable in the mid-50s on the upper Manistee where this time of year we like to hit the water armed with a dry fly rod rigged in the event of an emergence while we cover water with streamers.

With the back-and-forth weather, the hatches have been sporadic. A warm day or two (anyone seen the sun lately?) can make a difference and get those water temps into the upper 50s which is ideal for the bugs and fish to be more active. If headed to your favorite trout water – be it on the Manistee, Boardman or Au Sable, make sure you have Hendricksons, small Black Caddis, BWO’s and Black Quills.

Mix up your streamer patterns – size, color, what they are representing (baitfish, sculpin, accessorized triple articulated pattern you saw on-line) as the fish have seen a lot of streamers with more people hitting the water again this year and the mild March and April.

Folks looking to try something different might look to fishing a lake for smallmouth and even some pike. Just mix it up and think subsurface for your best results. It’s still a little early for the bluegill but after a hot day or two of sunshine the shallow, dark bottoms of bays and coves should have the fish in shallow doing a little pre-spawn feed. Late May Fly Fishing Report

The unofficial start of summer begins with Memorial Day weekend and this year it coincides with our technical match-the-hatch dry fly fishing on the Manistee, Au Sable and Boardman Rivers.

After a long winter and short, cool spring, warmer temps are coming around and so are the bugs. So many different bugs can be found on the water this time of year, you might find your gear bag/fly vest a little heavier with all of the fly boxes holding the appropriate fly patterns.

If headed to the river, look for: Light Hendricksons, BWOs, Black Quills, Sulphurs, Little Yellow Sally Stones, Medium Brown Stones, Mahoganies, and small Black Caddis. I wouldn’t be surprised if some Gray Drakes show up in the riffle sections of rivers any evening. Of course, the bugs come out when they come out and the evening mayfly spinner falls occur when temps hold steady, but be flexible and prepared for anything at any time – nature doesn’t follow a strict schedule. If there are no bugs around, go with some smaller weighted streamers fished on floating lines or short sink-tips for some sub-surface activity.

Those fishing lakes and ponds will find some large mouth bass in the shallows as well as those bigger bluegill that rarely give the shallow-water fly angler a chance to catch them.

The mosquitoes are just starting up to join the black flies so keep some bug repellent with you if needed; after the warm weather forecast, it’s likely to be required.

Early May Fly Fishing Report

As May comes around it is time to think about trout!

It appears that the steelhead run has pretty much come to an end after a good spring run. Some days were better than others but overall the 2017 spring steelhead numbers were real good and better than the previous two years. A few fish will continue to trickle in and out of the rivers but for the most part with water temps in the mid-50s, it’s pretty much over as they come in and go quickly.

The warmer days of April got the trout fishing going a little sooner with sporadic emergences of Hendricksons on the favorite rivers like the upper Manistee and AuSable. These bugs should continue to emerge with good spinner falls late in the afternoon and evenings as they begin to overlap with the other mayflies that start to emerge this time of year. Caddis, too, are showing up and as waters warm up even more, fish are chasing skittering imitations on the surface. But before and after any surface activity, anglers are best suited casting sink-tips and streamers for a chance at some really nice fish.

With Trout Opener taking place this past weekend, more rivers are open including parts of the Boardman and Platte so get out and get after those unpressured fish. As always, we strongly encourage catch and release since the DNR doesn’t do enough to manage our fisheries to their potential.

June Fly Fishing Report – Northwest / Traverse City Michigan

Other than a change in the weather, not a whole lot has changed on the local waters since last week’s report.

After 10 days of warm days and nights, some cooler weather moved in the past week leaving the nights cooler than ideal for hatches and spinner falls on the Trout Rivers. Surface activity and hatches has been off a little on the Manistee, Au Sable and Boardman rivers, however covering water has found some isolated “hatch zones”. You can expect a smorgasbord of bugs right now: Sulphurs, March Browns, Mahoganies, Brown Drakes, Isonychias, Blue Winged Olives, Caddis, Little Yellow Sally Stones, Medium Brown/Yellow Stones, and more have been seen on the water and in the air.

Water levels are still o.k. but clarity is an issue – it is too clear. Stealth and long presentations are required for the larger, selective fish but a good drift with the right fly can make it all worthwhile. On the bright days, seek shade and structure where fish are still approachable rather than tucked deep in log jams or undercut banks. Streamer fishing has been challenging in the clear water however smaller streamers have taken some nice fish lately.

Grand Traverse Bay is still running cool and as such the carp and smallmouth bass have been slow to get going. Often when you do find the carp they are moving and not feeding. As the water warms up on the flats, look for the pre-spawn feed to take place with some of the better fishing of the year. The smallmouth bass, too, are plagued by the cooler water. As the Smallies are in pre-spawn mode also and nomadically cruising , they will eat a fly – baitfish imitations and Gobies area great patterns to start with

The smaller lakes and ponds are fishing better for bass than the big water of the bay. Small streamers and even some smaller poppers and larger dry flies are working. Bluegill fishing has been mixed – some lakes are better than others and require some time to find those larger fish looking to bend your 3 wt. rod. Look in any weeds/bulrush in a foot of water for spawning fish. They can be hard to get when they are hidden and tucked away, but it’s also a time to get some nice hand-sized panfish/gills/sunnies before they head deep again.
