April Fishing Report

The local rivers are all running high with recent rains. The good news is we have a few days without any rain (or snow) in the forecast.

Higher water has meant dirty water. A flood gate was lifted on Tippy Dam yesterday which always frees up mud and algae while increasing the flow. The ice on the pond has melted so we should see the water temps break the 40-degree mark soon, especially with a forecast of air temps in the 50s. The Betsie almost always has a stain to it which only increases as the flow also increases.

Some steelhead have begun their spawning while others are headed up to do it. Look for fish to be just about anywhere in the river – softer seams for migrating fish, deeper holes and pocket water near spawning gravel for those waiting to get on it.

Proven flies have mostly been larger rag eggs and bead rigs in brighter colors including clown, pink, combos with cerise, and chartreuse.

Crowded conditions continue to be norm which isn’t anything new when it comes to Steelhead fishing in April. Smile and recognize that the next angler is only trying to do what you are.

Early November Fishing Report

November is here and as I type, so is the snow.

Last week’s high water has pretty much dropped to normal levels leaving local rivers like the Betsie and Manistee running just a little above average re: fall levels/flows, with a slight tinge to it and in the mid-40s – kind of ideal if not perfect. Except the steelhead didn’t get the memo. The past week was unusually tough fishing especially considering the time of year and the conditions we had which should have made for a great week of fishing.

The current forecast calls for a warming trend which should help keep the water temps in the mid-to upper 40s and ideal for a number of techniques and presentations (bottom-bouncing, indicators, spey/swinging flies).

Just a few salmon remain in parts of rivers finishing up their spawning with the steelhead still sitting in the runs behind them eating eggs. It’s the time of year that we start to mix up the presentation with some nymphs fished in tandem with the eggs, or even swinging the big fly on sink-tip lines, but like most of the fall, there hasn’t been any one size, color or pattern that has been the go-to proven leader. I’m blaming 2020 on the lack of consistency.

Late November Fishing Report

The mild fall came to an abrupt stop last week with a cold front and significant snowfall dropping the water temperatures in the local rivers. Temps on the Manistee and Betsie are in the upper 30s after dropping about 8 degrees in 10 days. Now as it rains, the snow is sure to melt but add some cool water to the river, keeping the temps in the river pretty much the same, but still cooler than we steelhead anglers want or expect for this time of year.

With the increase in water, look for the fish in the river systems to kind of shuffle around a bit as things had gotten a little stale the past two weeks. The egg bite is starting to give way to some nymphs and even a swung pattern. The bump in water flow can help dislodge both old, pale eggs and nymphs from gravel sections inducing a natural chum line. There is no front runner as far as color, size or pattern – the same as it has oddly been all fall.

Steelhead can be just about anywhere in the river systems and the type of water they hold in as they start to transition into late fall/early winter patterns; deep holes, tail outs, slow moving runs and structure are all places to target whether you are drift fishing, fishing floats/indicators or wielding the two-hander.

Firearms deer season continues through November – a little blaze orange to your ensemble might protect you from an adrenaline fueled rifle shot while on the water.

Mid-April Steelhead Fishing Report

Steelhead fishing continues on the local rivers, however the fishing has slowed recently with heavy angling pressure, a majority of the fish hitting spawn mode, and a lot of fish already having completed their annual task.

Water temps are in the mid-40s and bright days with lots of sunshine like today really help increase temps further. Clarity is good but that is likely to change with the rain that is forecast over the week; when that happens look for another push of fresh fish to move through the Betsie and Manistee river below Tippy Dam.

Productive flies have been mixed with green caddis, fry and smaller natural egg patterns being the front runners. Buggers and egg sucking leeches are picking up their fair share of fish as are some hex patterns.

Fish harvest continues to be more prevalent this year than years past – please conserve your catch and keep to ensure a future, sustainable fishery. Steelhead can return year after year but only if they stay off the rope and avoid the filet knife.

May Fishing Report

May is here and so is some weather to make up for such a cold April. Opening day of trout season took place over the weekend and greeted anglers with slightly high river levels and water temps lower than normal. It appears a few warm days are making a difference to get the mercury to rise when taking the water temp which is needed to bring on reliable hatches of Hendricksons and active trout. Unfortunately, there is rain in the forecast and while we need it, the rivers don’t need much of it as the upper Manistee, Boardman and Au Sable rivers are all running a bit high. The next month is the perfect time to fish streamers for big browns in the higher water but have a dry fly rod rigged for when some surface activity might present itself.

As the water continues to warm, the last of the steelhead have migrated into river systems and we are well beyond peak season. That big push of fish we were hoping for never came in but rather we experienced a good flow of fish throughout March and April. Remaining fish in the rivers are actively spawning and quickly getting it done before returning to the lake. Despite the cold April, it was a really good spring for steelhead numbers in the Manistee and Betsie rivers.

If you are still fishing steelhead rivers where they have recently stocked fish, please handle the young fish carefully as these are the big silver steelhead of the future.

More than trout season has opened up – local lakes are now ice-free and ice-out is a great time for those looking to target pike and musky in those dark, silty bays of lakes as they warm themselves up and put their post-spawn feedbag on.
