Early December Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - December 2, 2020

As we enter December, anglers will find steelhead throughout local river systems (Manistee and Betsie) and pretty well spread throughout them. Water temps are hovering around 40 degrees, but after some cold nights, the smaller rivers tend to drop temps until any sunshine that day might warm them up. Since the rivers aren’t very busy, sometimes it’s a good idea to get a later start and let both the air and water temps increase some. If there is one thing all species of fish don’t like, it’s a rapid drop in temps when things are already cool.

Not much has changed – it’s time to cover the water with your favorite method – drift fishing, indicators or swinging flies on sink-tips. Look for the fish to have moved into water a little slower than they have been as they begin to adjust to the colder temps and maybe consider taking up residence near some structure for the winter. A mix of fish are being caught – fresh chrome ones and some with a little color to them, especially the males. Bubble lines are still worth targeting, especially on the soft side of the current.

Eggs and beads are still working well, with caddis, hex and the occasional big stone fly working when tied below an egg. Swung flies in tan/brown with copper and olive and copper seem to have been more successful than other combinations.

There’s still some good weather and fishing to be had so don’t put your gear away just yet.

Ted

Early November Fly Fishing Report

Posted by Ted Kraimer - November 3, 2015

We finally received a decent amount of rain  and ideal winds late last week and with it came some much needed color to the water including some chrome. A few new steelhead moved through the system and are scattered throughout the Manistee as well a few in the Betsie River. It had been a while since the weather cooperated so it was good to see things go as planned, albeit late.

The forecast is calling for some odd weather – this week which should make the fishing comfortable which isn’t always the case in November.  70 degrees? It looks like the run will be very prolonged as fall progresses and water temperatures remain higher than normal. As it has been all season, the steelhead have been hard to land with the water temps hovering in the low 50’s so hang on tight.

Successful fly patterns  have been varied, always with an egg pattern (orange and chartreuse variations), and sometimes two when fishing near  the last of the salmon spawning on gravel. With a nymph bite starting to come on strong – caddis, buggers and big black stones  have been fished well in  conjunction with an egg pattern, also – especially when fishing the larger runs and deeper holes. With less eggs in the water this year due to low salmon numbers, look for the swing and streamer bite to be a little stronger, earlier this year.

Good luck!

Ted

Late Trout –  Brown trout fishing into late December can be some of the best streamer fishing of the year.
Fall Steelhead –  Look for the good fishing continuing in Nov. & into December for  steelhead on the Manistee.
Gift Certificates – With the holidays just around the corner consider giving or asking for some time on the water.

Sucker Spawn Egg Fly

Posted by Jeanne Kraimer - March 10, 2012

Sucker Spawn Egg PatternThis fly represents a clump of eggs released from either a walleye or a sucker, where it gets its name. It is easy to tie and looks very realistic when wet. Do know that if you tie it in oranges and in larger sizes to imitate steelhead or salmon eggs, it will tend to be fairly heavy and can easily drag a bit.

The material for the sucker spawn varies; some tiers choose to use angora yarn, small amounts of egg yarn, Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn to name just a few. Find what looks good to you and have some of these flies in your box. I use Needleloft yarn available at craft shops.

Sucker Spawn - Step 2Step 2. Take about 5” of each color thread and separate the two strands, using one of each color.

Sucker Spawn - Step 3Step 3. Lay the yarn parallel along the hook shank and wrap back towards the bend in the hook.

Sucker Spawn - Step 4Step 4. Take one strand of yarn and twist in your fingers stopping just before the
material double overs onto itself, then fold over, to make a loop and tie down.

Sucker Spawn - Step 5Step 5. Repeat with both strands/colors and vary it up a little for a realistic look.
(Notice how the different colors are on both sides of the hook shank?)

Sucker Spawn - Step 6Step 6. Whip finish.
