Early May Fishing Report

Trout season is underway on the Manistee with a smattering of hatches that can be present at any time of the day. It’s been a while since we have had any rain and the rivers are running clear with levels ideal for both floating or the wading angler.

This time of year there can be a handful of different bugs on the water including caddis (Mother’s day caddis – right on time), Hendricksons, Black Quills, some #8 and 10 yellow stone flies, BWOs, and more. With the forecast ahead calling for some above normal temperatures, I wouldn’t hesitate having some Sulphurs and Mahoganies in your fly box, too. Another bug that is unpredictable this time of year (aren’t they all anymore?) but worth having is the March Brown – some days the fish key-in on this meaty bug if they are around.

The streamer fishing has been off a little again this spring with the lack of color to the water, but smaller streamers fished on floating lines or even intermediate tip lines is a good alternative the the bigger patterns and heavier lines.

Smallmouth bass are starting to move where we can target them with flies as they are going into their pre-spawn binge. These fish continue to impress anglers when they play along and bend the rod giving an alternative to the technical match-the-hatch trout fishing.

Some smaller, dark bottomed lakes have had some bluegill fishing begin and it will only get better in the days ahead with the full moon phase on a small lake near you. It’s always fun having them come to the surface but if they are reluctant, micro streamers and larger swimming nymphs work well.

Early April Fishing Report

With the start of April behind us, anglers are finding water levels on the Manistee and Betsie uncharacteristically low and clear for this time of year. The region hasn’t received any significant rain yet this year and the snow melt has been gone for over a month. Without the rivers rising and being stained, the steelhead migration has been more of trickle than a “run”.

The fall fish that wintered over and those that came throughout the winter have already performed their spawning and moved back to the lake. There are a lot of empty gravel beds which should help with wild fish reproduction rates – all of our rivers could stand a population increase. Fishing has been tough as we continue to experience more anglers and less fish. Sure helps make the case for catch and release for those that don’t practice it.

With the water being clear, lighter line and smaller flies have been working better than the bigger and bolder patterns. Eggs and beads in smaller sizes and natural color schemes (orange-ish) have been working better than others. The green caddis tied in size 8 and 10 have been working well and the fry bite is starting to take place as more juvenile salmon fry are swimming around clueless – the fry bite is one of the more aggressive takes while nymphing. Don’t forget your black stones and hex nymphs.

The long-term weather forecast is calling for more of the same – dry conditions and mild temps. With the water in the low 40’s it might be a good thing that we don’t have a big push of water as the steelhead run would likely be condensed to a short 5 day event. As it looks, it will be a long, slow trickle of fish, until any appreciable rain and runoff takes place.

Late May Fly Fishing Report

The unofficial start of summer begins with Memorial Day weekend and this year it coincides with our technical match-the-hatch dry fly fishing on the Manistee, Au Sable and Boardman Rivers.

After a long winter and short, cool spring, warmer temps are coming around and so are the bugs. So many different bugs can be found on the water this time of year, you might find your gear bag/fly vest a little heavier with all of the fly boxes holding the appropriate fly patterns.

If headed to the river, look for: Light Hendricksons, BWOs, Black Quills, Sulphurs, Little Yellow Sally Stones, Medium Brown Stones, Mahoganies, and small Black Caddis. I wouldn’t be surprised if some Gray Drakes show up in the riffle sections of rivers any evening. Of course, the bugs come out when they come out and the evening mayfly spinner falls occur when temps hold steady, but be flexible and prepared for anything at any time – nature doesn’t follow a strict schedule. If there are no bugs around, go with some smaller weighted streamers fished on floating lines or short sink-tips for some sub-surface activity.

Those fishing lakes and ponds will find some large mouth bass in the shallows as well as those bigger bluegill that rarely give the shallow-water fly angler a chance to catch them.

The mosquitoes are just starting up to join the black flies so keep some bug repellent with you if needed; after the warm weather forecast, it’s likely to be required.

End of Winter? Fly Fishing Report

Winter has finally loosened its death grip on us as warmer and longer days, sunshine, and daylight savings time all converged having us feeling like Spring isn’t that far away.

Often when the weather gets warm and the snow melts at this time of year, many of us head to the river looking to shake the cabin fever and find some fish. While there are some, there aren’t many steelhead in the Manistee and Betsie rivers right now. The less than average fall run didn’t provide a lot of fish to winter-over and with many of the rivers iced over in the lower sections, the typical trickle of migrating fish throughout winter didn’t happen. So, while you still have a chance to catch fish right now, look for the runs to build as river ice disappears and water temps continue to warm up and pre-spawn fish migrate upstream.

The forecast calls for most nights to be below freezing which will help keep the run-off manageable. Water levels have increased and has a little stain to it which is common for this time of year. Regardless of whether you are wading or in a boat right now, keep an eye out for large chunks of ice drifting downstream. Waiting until the sun is out to warm up the water can make a difference this time of year let alone eliminate the black ice in parking lots and on boat ramps.

Look for fish to be in the slower water/holes and also tail-outs where they sun themselves if fishing pressure isn’t too high. It’s a good time of year to fish attractor egg patterns and larger nymphs like hex patterns. With fall’s salmon’s eggs hatching into fish, alevin and fry patterns should be a given time as we wait for the first black stonefly activity which should begin any day.

End of July Fly Fishing Report – Traverse City Region

As much as we appreciate the cooler weather this past week, it takes a little while for the fish to get use to the change in water temps. Cooler water temps are good for the fish and after a day or two off relative consistent weather they are happy and playing our game again.

The hatches on the upper Manistee and Boardman have been quite limited lately with just a few bugs around including Isos, Cahills, Big Olives, and Tricos. Fishing a bead head nymph in runs has produced some fish as they aren’t looking up too much with the bright sun. A very small streamer fished on a floating line has been a good approach, too. When those two presentations don’t work, try small terrestrials and the big rubber leg and foam creations – hoppers, Chernobyl Ants and other large profile bugs that have a little motion in them. The rivers are pretty quiet and a morning spent on the river this time of year is not only a great way to stay cool, but have it to yourself while catching brown and brook trout

Fishing on the lakes and ponds has been good for those looking to cash in on bass on large swimming diver bass bugs and large poppers. Weed beds and lilly pads have been the ideal place to target these fish especially when they are adjacent to cover like wood and drop offs. Keep in mind leader size is important when casting those big wind resistant flies. Bluegill have been playing along too and closer to the shallow water since the big fish in the deeper water tend to eat them – small dries like hoppers, ants, spiders and beetles have been working on top with small baitfish streamers working bellow.

The Smallmouth Bass fishing on the Lower Manistee continues to fish well. Medium to large streamers with lots of flash fished on both floating lines and short sink-tips have been the ticket. Crayfish bounced along the bottom and twitched are always good around rocks especially with the big moon that is out right now. While they aren’t as big as the fish we catch in the bay, the river smallmouth fight hard, get us on the river and make us better fly anglers.
