Early April Fishing Report

After a week of high and highly stained water, the river levels have returned to normal flows for this time of year and still have a bit of a stain, which also is normal for this time of year. Water temperatures are in the low 40s thanks to some cold nights and the lack of warm days to keep the run from running it’s course in short order.

The steelhead continue to be mixed – pre-spawn, spawning and post spawn. The males tend be a little older as they dance from gravel bar to gravel bar and have the color to show for it while fresh females are continuing to slip upstream. As with the fall run, the spring run has had more “skippers” (15-22” fish) than the larger adults however it seems lately a few more bigger fish are making a return to the river and bending the rod more. Don’t forget these smaller fish are next year’s bigger fish and the new fishing regulations as of April 1 limits harvest to only 1 steelhead/rainbow trout.

Larger flies have been working in the stained water – leeches, large stones and fry patterns tied below egg patterns and beads which have been bolder and more prominent in the stained water. Egg patterns with chartreuse have been working better than they had been, but that also usually results in an encounter with some walleye on the Manistee below Tippy dam as that’s seems to be a perennial favorite color of theirs. With the lack of rain in the forecast, I suspect smaller and more natural toned patterns will improve in effectiveness as the water continues to clear up.

Mid-March Steelhead Fishing Report

The longer days, return of sunshine and the installation of frost law speed limit signs on the shoulders of highways are indications that it’s Spring Steelhead season.

A late arriving but “old school” winter with lots of snow and cold temps kept winter enthusiasts happy in N.W. Michigan, but the slow thaw these past weeks provided a lot of groundwater and the return of brown to the landscape. Luckily the ground was not frozen and the regional snowpack mostly dripped into the water table without creating too much run-off. As such, the spring fed trout rivers and streams are recharged for the year and our steelhead fishing wasn’t condensed to a couple of weeks before most anglers got out.

The Manistee and Betsie rivers are both running full with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. There is some color and stain which steelhead prefer as they migrate upstream under it’s cover. However, the brighter days, frankly, make for tough conditions as the fish either go deep or off to the side into wood. Shaded holes and runs, or early and late times of the day can make the difference in success. Majority of the fish have been in the river either over the winter or the past 6 weeks, but a few fresh, bright ones have been moving through the systems and acting a little spunkier when hooked.

Fish have been taking a mix of both eggs and nymphs without much of a common denominator or an outlier catching more fish. More subtle color egg schemes have outperformed the bold bright versions, but as the water is likely to darken with some additional run-off, look for that to change. A few early stoneflies have come off and it’s usually a good time to fish some of those. The usual suspects are always good to have in your fly box during spring steelhead season as we put winter behind us.

Late April Fishing Report

As April winds down, I can say I’ve never experienced one like this one before.

The steelhead fishing was affected by the lack of rain and high water from a snowpack that never happened in this El Nino year. Winter was mild and so was the run of fish as they seemed to be spread out over 3 months without any noticeable peak. I suspect the trickle of fish will continue but it will be even lighter as we approach May.

There are still some fish to be found in the Betsie and Manistee but with water temps in the low 50s, they seem to come and go quickly with some males hanging around in out for their next date to show up.

Here in Traverse City the Boardman has some fish in it for close to home fishing or in my case – fun observation from the bridge as I go to the post office. It actually offers a good opportunity to watch steelhead behavior…. like fish sitting in the deep holes behind the gravel, how a stable, solo fish in a hole changes its attitude when another fish moves in, or fish moving into the shadow of the bridge when the sun gets overhead. Anyway, there are fish around in our rivers but it is winding down.

With the warmer weather and trout season officially opening this Saturday, it might be time exchange your steelhead rod for your favorite dry fly and streamer rods. Some rivers are open all year, others extended seasons and most closed until the last Saturday in April – check the MI-DNR Regulations if you aren’t sure.

Hendricksons have been spotty but showing up most days when conditions are right. Fish this time of year aren’t overly selective, but they do need some bugs on the surface to get them to look up. When an emergence isn’t around, cover the water with a streamer. Water clarity of the upper Manistee, AuSable and Boardman is a little clearer than we expect for this time of year so a mid-sized streamer likely will be a better pattern rather than the large ones.

Mid April Fishing Report

Not much has changed since the last report as a trickle of fresh fish move up the rivers as others spawn, while those that already have drop back to the lake.

We have had some rainfall but not as much as we were hoping for to really test the hypothesis that there are a bunch of steelhead ready to migrate once conditions ripened with warmer, higher and dirtier water. Temps on the Manistee are mid to upper 40s while the Betsie is hovering around 50 degrees.

While the Manistee hasn’t yet had the push of suckers to swim upstream, the Betsie has a lot of them below the old Homestead dam site. These help as indicators of the steelhead run. Typically (and this no typical year) a second, smaller run of steelhead occurs after the sucker run on both rivers.

Successful patterns have been smaller eggs, small caddis, fry and small black stones, however, the latter are starting to diminish in density when hatches do occur which should reduce the pattern’s effectiveness going forward. With water temperatures what they are, it isn’t a bad time to swing a small streamer looking for aggressive fish headed upstream or one putting some weight back on as they return to the lake.

April Fishing Report

Steelhead fishing on the Manistee and Betsie Rivers has been slower than normal for this time of year.

While we have received some rain events over the past two weeks, the fish haven’t showed up in significant numbers, but rather just a trickle of fresh fish. Because the land is dry (lack of snow pack, swamps half-filled, dry ground) the river levels only come up briefly before returning to low and clear conditions. Migratory steelhead like to ascend rivers when the water is up and dirty. I asked a customer who has fished with me each Spring the past 16 years when the last time he saw the river this clear, this time of year and he replied, “never”.

The lack of rain in the forecast likely means the low water and low fish numbers will continue until more water comes. The absence of other species in the river that also migrate upstream this time of year haven’t shown up in numbers either and that gives us faith that there are still more steelhead to come.

With the clear conditions, the same flies from previous weeks seem to be working better than others – small, natural egg patterns, small black stones, small green caddis and fry patterns.
